I have been motivated! I am 31 years old and OUT OF SHAPE!!! I was a multi-sport athlete in HS and went to college for Track (Discus). After 1 year I transfered to a different college and gave up my career as an athlete, but started coaching. That was 12 years ago. I'm now what I consider to be an overweight track coach that wants to get back in shape, like many other people out there. I'm starting small with an 8-week program designed to build enough endurance to run for 30 minutes. From there I plan on starting a 5K training routing and running my first 5K in late May (or before if I'm kicking but), but late May is the goal. Anyone that has similar goals please joing this group and let's do this as a team! Motivate - Encourage - Succeed

Hi!
A beginners group is a great idea. I have just started a few weeks ago and have the same target as you: running 30 minutes in one piece. The start was disastrous, I had to stop after 15 minutes... But it's getting better and better. But what should I excepect after roughly 10 years of no sports and 1 pack of cigarettes a day? :-) But the cigarettes are history and running can't be harder than stop smoking - at least I hope so ;-)

I would think that if you can stop smoking that you can do just about anything that you put your mind to. Glad to see you joining the group. Hopefully we can get some more people with similar goals on here too.

Thanks for creating this group. I'm new to Nike+, new to running, new to RunnerPlus. I've always liked the idea of being a runner, someone who was fit, threw on a pair of shoes and effortlessly jogged around the local lake or down the nearby neighborhood path...etc.

I know this will take work and I am starting out slowly. When I mention my runs it's with air quotes, since I'm only walking so far. My first goal seems to be the same as most, run for 30 minutes.

Greetings All, I too am new to running. I am starting out with my poor lab who has also gotten sadly out-of-shape (as have I). We are mostly walking at this point but starting to run a little more each outting! By the end of next week we should be at a 50/50 walk/run. I'm trying to ease into this one so there are no joint issues.

I think a beginners corner is a great idea, this area and the Nike+ will be a great motivator!

Great Idea, I have found that many really like the "Couch to 5K" program to get back on track. You can find it on i-Tunes and it's a free download. Thanks for setting up the group.

It looks like we're getting some good numbers in here and that's great. If anyone needs help finding a workout program that works for them feel free to post in here that you would like help or shoot me an e-mail and I would be glad to help you out. I'm a certified strength and conditioning coach with a concentration in nutrition so I can also help you out if you are looking for a "meal" plan. I don't like to use the word "diet" even though many people want to lose weight there are several people that dive in a little too much and end up burning out because they aren't getting enough nutrients in their body to maintain the "shock factor" that the body is experiencing. Going from the couch to the track is a GREAT thing, but there are good ways and bad ways to do this. I am going to start a new thread in the group for nutrition information and one for workout information. Good luck to everyone in their quest for whatever their goals are. Bye for now...

Great idea for a group. I am a 'beginner again' and a motivating group would be great.

My first goal is to get back into a running routine (3-4 times per week for 20-30 min).
My next goal would be to run longer ... but first must just get in the routine and get comfortable running for that length of time.

a great idea to have a beginners group. i've finally gotten back into getting into shape after many years of lethargy. although i was quite active in hs in team sports, i somehow managed to duck out of warm-up runs/training runs at tennis camp and for other sports. this is going to be a challenge as i could do hours on a court, but not even make it down the block on a jog. i need to get my stamina up and become comfortable running at lentght. aiming for a 10k at end feb...

Hi all

I've started running again recently after a long (7 year!) break. My friend got me into the nike+ thing and this site and I'm keen to keep the motivation I've found. Got the beginnings of the foot pain which put a stop to my running before though so need to temper my enthusiasm and take it slowly but surely.

Hi, happy to see there is a place for me here! I am a walker right now, but I am interested in running and just starting out trying to condition myself by running within my walks to increase stamina. I hope everyone is well!

Hi runners,
I just started running recently. what really motivated me was getting in shape (i was a couch potato, haha). now, i'm really loving it. i'm looking forward to doing my first race.

it's nice to know there's a group for newbies like me.

goodluck to everyone.
