Possible new scoring system

I was thinking of making the scoring easier to understand and encourage tagging.

1) Runners will get 1 point for every 10 miles they run. Any miles run before joing the challenge are ignored. If you do not run you will get no points. If you are Runner51 or Glovehead you will get you points delivered in an 18 wheeler.
2) When you tag another runner you get 5 points. You will still have 3 days to tag someone. If you do not tag anyone you will get no points.

I do like your proposal. My first thought was that 1 point = 10 mile is putting too much stress on the running. Tagging is the main purpose of the game, I think. But a good tagging is worth 2 Marathon runs. Sounds good to me.
BeerRunner, you are putting a lot of effort into this game. Thanks a lot: It is appreciated throughout the (runnerplus) world.

So in the new method you want to get points? The new method is nice because it not only encourages tagging but also running. So although I would no longer be winning :( I do think I like the new way. I just have to get my butt outside and go running. With that I am off here to go do just that.

Also, there would no longer be the clever loophole of if I just never run then no one can pass and tag me, therefore I would never get any points.

The new system sounds okay to me.

The one thing I see as confusing is anyone joining the challenge now will jump in the middle at some point. (Since when you join, all your miles since the challenge will be added in.) Not a big thing though.

bigRahn, I forgot to say that I have kept a record of eveyone's starting miles so it can be subtracted from their total. As an example iMama started with 205 miles, it's all on my, no longer little, spreadsheet.

I liked the old idea that a person who didn't have many miles was never totally out of the game because everyone came back through every hundred miles. As you said, Glovehead and Runner51 will get truckloads of points and it becomes just like any other distance challenge. I do think a change is in order since under the old system everyone was so close in points.

I also support a scoring change. While there could be points awarded for miles run, I think it is important to emphasize the "tag" aspect via points. To me, it is bad to be tagged... you don't want people catching you. If you are tagged, you should lose points. However, if you tag off to someone else within a time limit (three days), you should gain points. Further, those who don't tag within three days should have additional points removed.

In concept:
Every 50 miles run = 3 points
You get tagged = -3 points
You tag someone within three days = 2 points
You don't tag someone within three days = -2 points

It's hard to avoid getting a tag because you might just get a few km ahead of someone and then they can go out and catch you if they run again before you do. Having said that, I think its cool because otherwise all the high mileage freaks would never get a tag. What about if you tag someone you get ten percent of their points and they go down accordingly. It'd also be good if you got an email when you got a tag. Great challenge BeerRunner.

This has to be creating a large amount of work for you, BeerRunner. Is it difficult to keep up with?

I've played an elimination tag challenge before where if you don't make your tag within 5 days, you're eliminated. That could make for shorter but more active challenges.

It take about 30-45 minutes per night to update the mileage and scores. It's not hard just time consuming.

I thought about elimination tag and I might do that next time if people are interested. ;-)
