A couple of nights ago i went for a run and about fifteen minutes into it i felt as though my laces were a bit to tight but it wasnt that bad so i just ran through it for another half an hour until i had done a 10K run.The next morning i got out of bed and could hardly walk more so on my left foot than my right but still both were very sore when i put any sort of pressure on the big toe sides of my foot, primarily the pain is above the arch of my foot so ive had to walk on the outsides of my feet for the last day or two, makes me look a bit silly but so be it...I have done a bit of research on line and i have came to the conclusion that my laces were directly over the tendons that run over the top of the arch and with the laces being to tight have been putting to much pressure on tendons and possibly nerves which have been causing the pain.Have any of you guys had problems with this before? If i have my trainers to loose the feel just not right to run in but i have never had this problem of overtightening before.Does the pain just last a few days as i need to run again dont know why but you will know yourselves its very addictive.
Cheers
Pete.

I have had this happen on some longer runs, seeming because my feet swell up as I run. I was okay to run again a few days later. Howie's link should help you avoid the problem again.

Hi Swampthang,
I don't want to worry you but the pain above your arch sounds very similar to the problem I currently have with my left foot. After running or fast walks I have a pain above my foot where it joins the ankle. Tight footwear makes it worse but I have been told by my physio that my arch has collapsed. I would get it checked as, like you, I thought it was nothing serious and took painkillers and kept running. Now I have been sidelined for over a month and I am only able to do about 1k at a time now.

Hmmm i will see how it goes over the next few days it feels like it is getting better but depends on how i walk cos sometimes i just get a nasty pain shooting up my foot.
I dont think it would be collapsed arch as i have the problem on both feet and from the same run,but i am going to take it easy for a few days anyway.

I have experienced a pain in the top outside of my foot, between the ankle and the toes. Like you I find myself walking on the outside of my feet. With some stretching and a few random movements the pain goes away and I can walk fine. But it seems to come back more frequently.
I don't have an answer - and I am reading about BeerRunner's collapsed arch! I have thought that too tight laces could be contributing, and have tried some alternate lacing.
Keep us posted, and good luck!!

I did that in my first marathon - tied my timing chip on too tight! That was the most painful thing I've ever had! The top of my foot felt crushed & on fire for days. Ice & loose laces until it's better. Probably just irritated or bruised. OUCH! Worse than a blister!

Maybe silly but yet again maybe not!!Took a gamble today and went for a run/slow jog and i think it has paid off i had a pain about half a mile into it but it seemed to go away so i jogged on,it was my lunch hour so i could only go for so long anyway but i managed a 5 miler and i have not had a reoccurence apart from a little bruised feeling but i had that anyway so heres hoping that i am now on the mend and can start clocking up the miles again but i will be keeping the pace down for a while.

I had something like this also and you definitely need to get it checked. In my case, too tight laces and running downhill irritated an arthritic spur from an old hockey injury. My doctor said it will hurt if irritated but I am doing no further damage by running, so somehow that makes the pain ok.

Now I am using the lacing technique on the far left of the picture heading up the article linked to above, ie criss cross to the middle, straight up the sides where the irritation is, then criss cross to the 2nd from top and straight to the very last hole which is usually slightly to the side. The last bit makes the shoe feel much more secure even though the laces are loose across the top.

Good luck!
