i find it to be kinda rude that people cant even muster a head nod when you say good morning/good evening. but i never let it stop me. eventually, they will all nod, even if its to the music they're listening to.

If I meet other people, I usually look at them and if they look back, then I say hello or wave a hand. Where I live (in The Netherlands), most of the time (>95%) people will return your greeting...

A coworker and I were just talking about this same subject and I have to say after our conversation , I had to go out and experiment. I got snubbed 4 times before getting a nod. The next 5 people all said "hi" in one way or another. I didn't care though. I always initiate the "hi".

I live in a suburb/small town outside a medium-sized middle-American mid-Western city. I always say "hi" or smile & wave. Everyone reciprocates, except for one surly couple who look right through me as if I don't exist. If you are out there, beware! I am going to get SOOOOO friendly, you won't be able to resist.

I always wave or nod....and if I see the same person on the way back I wave again...I appreciate it when people wave, it is a nice gesture.

It's interesting to see that when with the snow and ice there were hardly any runners every person you did see nodded or waved. Today with the weather being nice again there were a lot of people who were struggling too hard with themselves to do it

Hi all. One of these days I might stop and tell them in a "rude" manner how rude most runners in my area (Madrid) are. During my runs I cross around 5-10 people. I raise my hand to everyone and some 60% return it. However, it is me who 90% of the time starts the greeting...

I won't stop but come on people, we are all suffering, just say hi!

I'm originally from Canada where it was normal to acknowledge people on a run. Now that I live in London I've discovered that it's the norm to ignore other runners.

i call this forced socialization - i always smile and often share a greeting when i approach someone - whether running, walking, coming towards you in our head quarter's building...funny, i don't think much if i don't get a response...some people are just like that. simply glad i am not

Since I run on a treadmill, I don't get many opportunities to say hi to people. This thread reminds me of my cross country days - whenever we had a long road run of some sort we'd wave at every car coming toward us and see how many waves/nods/honks we could get in response. It was entertaining and made the run seem shorter. Since we were from a small town and cross country is the only sport my school is ever good at, we could normally get ~90% response rate.
