Chris says:I received my Garmin Forerunner 405 today with the intention to sell my Forerunner 305 (but keeping the HRM strap).
I will be going for my first run with it later today, but here are my first impressions (a review) so far, in comparison to my 305.
The WatchHey, it now looks like a watch instead of a PDA on my wrist! With that being said, I am not as impressed with the size of it that I thought I would be. It's still a gigantic watch. In fact, if you hold the 305 and the 405 next to each other side-by-side, they are the same exact thickness! The 405 is just re-designed to be a slicker, smoother-looking watch with a rounded display instead of a big rectangle. It also "hugs" my wrist a lot better than the 405, feeling more like a normal watch. With that being said, I probably will wear it more like a sport watch, but not all the time due to its bulky size.
The wristband is the same rubbery material as the 305, but is wider. The band is easier to latch, and the end of the strap gets locked down which solves a problem I had with my 305 where the end of the strap kept popping out. The only problem I have with the band is that it can tug on ye ol' arm hairs when you're putting it on, and it is a bit of a process. One thing's for sure... once it's on your wrist, it isn't going to come off. The downside is that it's not like a normal watch which is typically easy to take on and off.
The touch-sensitive bezel is nice, but a bit awkward. I'm still getting used to it. Even in the video demos you can see the person operating the watch often over or under-shoots the menu options. Something tells me that I'm going to be frustrated with it during a run if I have to use it.
The SoftwareFirst off, most important issue: there is Zero Mac support. The frustrating thing about this is that nowhere does it say this. Not on the box it came in, and not in the documentation that comes with the 405. Thankfully I have both Mac and Windows PCs, but I primarily use a Mac. Even the 305 has some moderate support for Mac. I called Garmin and they confirmed that Mac support is non-existent, and if you are a Mac-only runner, you'll have to wait for "late Q3 or Q4 2008" to use this device. Merry Christmas!
The product comes with no CD, so you need to go to Garmin's website to get what you need. No big deal, and actually I appreciate this tactic because most of the time the software that you get with a device is already outdated by the time you get it and you have to go online to update it anyways. The docs say to go to
www.garmin.com/products/forerunner405 to register and download your software. The problem is that it's not very clear where to do this once you get there. Next, once I did register the 405 all I saw was a browser plugin for the Garmin Connect. This had a Mac option, which was confusing, because it does not yet support the 405.
So I turned to my Windows Vista PC and installed the Garmin Connect plug-in. I put in the ANT USB dongle and expected magical things to happen. Nothing happened, however, and I had to dig around a bit more to find out where to get the ANT USB drivers for Windows. Again, not very self-explanatory. I'm a computer geek, a web developer with end-user application development experience. It's not like I don't know what I'm doing, so this whole startup procedure with the 405 was a bit frustrating. At this point I'm thinking it would have been nice to have an install CD that told me which operating systems it supported, installed the ANT driver, and whatever browser plug-ins that were needed.
More to come...Off to a shaky start, I'm hoping that it gets better... and I'm hoping that development for the 405 is a possibility. Since there's no direct access to the data (that I can tell, initially) and they use a web browser plug-in only to sync the data, that means there's no end-user software like Training Center for the 305, where you can export your data.
