Hi All, I don't have an Apple or Nike store. Yes, rural PA doesn't have those conveniences. I purchased my kit at Olympia Sports Store. I used mine for about two weeks and the battery became an issue. I just took it back to the store and they gave me an entire new Nike+ Sports Kit. I found it interesting that the associates didn't know anything about the kit they sold me and also thought you could only use the Nike+ shoes. They were quite amazed when I popped it in my lacelid and took a quick spin around the instore track to make sure it was working before leaving.

I haven't had the problem of the sensor running out of battery. Just wondering... for those that are lucky enough to have the battery run out on you, approximately what mileage was that? I know it probably varies among users, but I'd like to see what the approximate mileage is.

I am around 350 for mine and it seems to be going strong. I am assuming maybe around 500 miles it will start to go bad. How would I know it started to go bad though?

Thanks.

At about 700 miles (10 months) I had a recurring message that my sensor battery was low.

The warning signal is as Smiler says above and mine finally died on its ass today. No more will I have that friendly voice in my ears. In total I think that I have completed 625 miles over 100 Nike running hours.

I got the sensor in July 2006 and it has been switched on ever since. So I think I have got a good service out of it. I probably will not replace it as I have been using a Garmin 305 for the past 6 weeks and that is so much more powerful. Yes, I know I am not comparing like for like. But, hopefully Chris will be bringing on the Garmin development and I can still post my runs hear magically. It is too much of a PITA to do it manually.

I hope Nike comes out with additional functionality. I will keep using the nikeplus because I need music or podcasts on my runs...Garmin doesn;t have that. I have enough gear on me as it is. Don't need extra stuff...

manical, I will still use the iPod for teh musics. I will just do without the transmitter from now on. It served a purpose while I had it and I cannot fault it for that. Now that my training is more focused than before I need to be able to trust the results from my training.

Laura

I am just going to give up on Nike+ I have gone to the dark side and I am using a Garmin 305. I did consider the Forerunner 50 that you are looking at but, the 305 was highly recommended on another forum that I frequent. There are distinct differences between the F50 and F305. the choice really is based on what you want to get out of it.

Product comparison is as in this link

The decision they say, is yours.

Argh, I believe that leaving your gym bag in the car will also cause your sensor to go bad prematurely. I just got to go running for the first time since recuperating from an injury, and the sensor went bad. Maybe I can sweet talk footlocker.

I found this post on the Starling Fitness blog. Caveat Emptor... I have not tried this, but may do so once my chip actually dies...

Hi Guys,

I was also annoyed to have to buy a whole new kit but could not find anyone who would have replaced the battery in the sensor… So went ahead and did it !

I can confirm that it is VERY easy and WORKS :-)

Just make a small slit in the sensor, pop off the top using a screwdriver, detach the connections to the battery, replace with a standard CR2032 and put the thing toghether…

Will take 5-10 min. first time, probably only 2 min. for next replacements !

Beyond saving $30 + S/H (but I am Dutch, so it counts :-), I felt that trowing away millions of functioning sensors and receivers is not very green either and should not be encouraged !!

When I first got my Nike+ and was cruising the internet for more info - I was really impressed with this site (Runnerplus) because they had photos of the disected sensor. For those of you wanting to try yourself these may help. Here is the link from a past posting on this site. I know I am going to try. Just ran the battery out on my first sensor, bought a new one 'cause "I just have to have my Nike+" but might as well try this. I'll post again after trying.

I opened my dead sensor today. Far more difficult than I expected to crack the case - and no real way to reseal it once it's open except for Crazy Glue I guess. Also the connectors to the battery are glued tight. Replacing the battery is not for your average, faint of heart, non-techie. It's somewhat difficult. Much easier to plonk down the $20 for a replacement sensor.

zen, I agree... I did the same thing a month ago and thought it was such a hassle, why bother? $20 is by far the easier way to go.

FWIW, I had a bad experience with my first two (!) sensors. I bought it from a running store, and within few weeks, it was giving me the low battery error. The running store was cool and replaced the kit without a hassle. Sadly, sensor #2 started giving me the error by the second run. This time, I sent the thing back to Apple, and they sent me another one in the mail within a couple days. Sensor #3 lasted around 10 months. I was satisfied with that, but I feel like there should be a way to replace the battery without surgery. I think it's a wasteful design.

So far, Sensor #4 is working fine. I bought it from Apple directly.

What I think happened in my case, and perhaps in some of the cases reported in this thread, is that the store received a crate of Nike+ Sports Kits and they just hung on the wall for six months or more before I came along and bought it. Meanwhile, the batteries slowly drained away. When I bought it from Apple, the battery was weeks old, perhaps, instead of months old.

I would agree that it is truely wasteful to have to bin the sensor, seems a bit cazy in this day of environmental awareness. Mine has gone after 4.5 months of use, and I've manually uploaded a run using nano's stopwatch, and using the nike+ distance from a prevous run of the same route, and I miss Paula and co. telling me i'm getting faster!!

Last Friday I spent almost an hour going through the various levels of Apple tech support to see if they can send me a replacement. Mine was a gift at Xmas and the struggle was not having proof of purchase, so I said I'd sedn the w/end trying to get a copy of the receipt. they were going to call me back today but no show so far, and couldn't bear another our on the phone mainly spent in queues.

I went to a shop near work and it seems rare that stores other than apple sell replacements which seems a bit of a shortfall considering it needs replacing. Apple's site shows £14 for a sensor, the whole kit only costs a little more on the internet. But i'd certainly want to see serail numbers before i buy...

...One thing i did learn from tech support, the serial number gives a clue to when manufactured, mine was mid-2006 and out of warranty, hence the fight to get a replacement, and seems it's been on someone's shelf for a while before it was bought. I don't have the packaging any more, so not sure if it's readable when purchasing, but mine starts 4H62, I'm guessing the 6 is the year, so if you need to buy a new kit make sure the digit is the current year. If anyone out there has knowledge of apple serial numbers would be good to know them.

As mine is dead, I cant see any harm in trying to replace the battery, thanks for posts above for details. But i'm dissapointed knowing i'm going to have to throw these things away as they die, shame they arnt rechargeable like most apple products, I'll probably get another but also do some research on the garmin alternates

My nike+ sensor just died after about 600 mi. of running again, so I made step by step instructions on replacing the battery your self for under $5. It's really easy and you don't need any fancy tools. It's been working really well for me so far, and I've done it twice. The instructions are at:    www.instructables.com/id/Replace-battery-in-Nike-receiver-for-under-5

Hope this helps!

$20 or a sharp object in my hands? I'm spending the $ and saving my hands. If it's about green, I'll find a constructive use for the dead ones or give them to somebody who wants to replace the battery.

Mine has crapped out at 4 months and 153 miles. Ugh! Need to look at the warranty information on it, because that is clearly not 1000 active hours.
