| Shawn's Jog Log:
So today, I decided to finally check out the new neighborhood I just moved into. There's this glorious road on one end of the neighborhood that is filled with these huge mansions and the Lansing country club. The road is rather hilly, and about half of it runs right along the Grand River and is very scenic and very beautiful. So out I went...
I felt amazing starting out. The route is different than my normal loop in that it is an out-and-back route rather than the loop. My breathing felt great and I really felt good about my pace. About 3/4 of the way towards the point where I would turn around, I came across a rather large downward hill that lasts quite a while. Overall, the first half of the out-and-back is steadily downhill, but there's this huge dropoff at the aforementioned point. So there I am turning around at the 1.8 mile mark or so still feeling great, when I realize that I have to run back up this monster. At this point in the run, I'm still feeling really good except for a slight stitch in my side. So I start the dreaded climb and eventually make it to the top only to realize that I have spent every ounce of energy I had in my tank. My muscles didn't want to move anymore and I couldn't breathe in air fast enough. So I ended up calling it a run and enjoyed the scenery back to my house.
On one hand, I was once again disappointed in my lack of distance. On the other hand, it motivated me to set a few new goals. Zach and I are going to develop some more goals to run with over the next few weeks. In addition, a new personal goal of mine is to defeat this route. After "The Monster", I realized it is still a steady uphill climb until home. One of my new goals is to defeat "The Monster" and make it through the whole route which should eventually be about 3.75-4 miles or so.
Lastly, I'm going to put my new "Shin Pain Meter" in each of my jog logs to hopefully notice a trend in my battle with pain. The scale will be 0-10 with 0 being no pain and 10 being really, really painful. So here it is:
Shin Pain Meter: Left Leg (no sleeve): 0 Right Leg (with sleeve): 4
